John Pearson letter, 1838.

This collection consists of a three-page letter from John Pearson to J.J. Fisher of Baltimore, Maryland; Pearson was on watch at the time of the wreck of the steamer, SS Pulaski off the coast of North Carolina in 1838. This letter relates to the wreck and gives the reason for the explosion of the boilers on the ship. The SS Pulaski was built by the Savannah and Charleston Steam Packet Co. and its principal owner was Gazaway Lamar. The ship left Savannah, Georgia, on June 13, 1838, stopped in Charleston, South Carolina to board passengers, and continued on to its destination of Baltimore. A boiler explosion caused the ship to sink off the coast of North Carolina; over 100 people died in the wreck, including Gazaway Lamar's wife and four children.
